MERSIN – There are 80 ill prisoners in prisons in the Mediterranean Region. IHD member lawyer Muammer Derince said that preventing the release of prisoners is “de facto execution”.

According to the latest report of the Human Rights Association (IHD), there are 1 thousand 412 ill prisoners in prisons, at least 335 of them seriously ill.

It is learned that the number of ill prisoners in Antalya, Burdur and Mersin prisons in Mediterranean Region is 80.

'ACTUAL DEATH PENALTY'

Speaking about the situation of ill prisoners, lawyer Muammer Derince, spokesperson of IHD Mersin Branch Prison Commission, said that legal mechanisms for releases have been rendered dysfunctional. Derince stated that the main responsibility for the lack of releases despite hospital reports lies with the Forensic Medicine Institution (ATK), Administrative and Observation Boards (IGK) and the Presidency, and described the prevention of releases for political reasons as "de facto execution". Underlining that the deficiencies in the health system aggravate the situation, Derince called for responsibility, adding: "The obstacles to access to the tests performed by the prisoner when he/she goes to the hospital should be removed, family members or guardians should be able to access this information via e-government."

Pointing out that the right to access to health has been de facto abolished and this situation has serious consequences, Derince said that the practices in prisons have become a threat to the lives of ill prisoners.
