IHRNGO: One thousand 20 people executed in Iran in 8 months

NEWS CENTER - Iran Human Rights announced that 9 people were executed and stated that at least one thousand 20 people have been executed since 1 October 2024.

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) reported that 9 people sentenced to death on charges of “moharebeh (enmity against god) through baghy (armed rebellion) and possession of firearms” were executed. In the statement, which stated that Iranian state media did not disclose the identities, nationalities, date and place of execution of the executed people, it was reported that the increased executions started after the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on 27 September 2024 and amid the escalating tension between Iran and Israel.

IHRNGO stressed that since 1 October 2024, at least one thousand 20 people have been executed, an average of one person every six hours in 8 months and 10 days. The organisation condemned the mass executions and called for international action.

CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC OPINION

IHRNGO Director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: “The nine men’s death sentences were issued by the Revolutionary Court without adherence to minimum fair trial standards, and have therefore no legal validity. Moreover, the Islamic Republic has been executing an average of one person every six hours in the past eight months without any adequate response from the international community.”

He added: “The executions in Iran have crossed the threshold of a crisis and must be met with a strong and urgent response from the United Nations, the European Union, and all governments that have diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic and adhere to human rights principles.”

Report added the details and stated: “Due to their vague definitions, the charges of moharebeh (enmity against god), efsad-fil-arz (corruption on earth) and baghy (armed rebellion) are used for a wide range of offences. Additionally, as they are within the Revolutionary Courts’ jurisdiction, there is considerable subjectivity in the judgements made in the cases. In 2024, at least 31 people were executed for security-related charges.”
