DİYARBAKIR - Chamber of Architects Diyarbakır Branch Board Member Herdem Doğrul evaluated the decision of UNESCO to make a request for an investigation 4 years after the clashes as a “late decision  for Sur.

In the report of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) published before the 43rd World Heritage Committee meeting in Azerbaijan, UNESCO stated that they want to investigate the walls of Diyarbakır (SUR) and Hewsel Gardens which was declared a cultural landscape area. Herdem Dogrul, Member of the Board of the Diyarbakir Branch of the Chamber of Architects, evaluated what UNESCO's decision meant.

'A LATE DECISION'

Criticizing the UNESCO report that the Delegation warned that no work would be done in the Tigris Valley until the review of the delegation, Dogrul said that this decision was taken late. Dogrul also stated that they will present their work as a Chamber of Architects to the UNESCO delegation

Doğrul assessing that the examination demand coming from UNESCO 4 years later means that they did not want to put Turkey in a ight spot, said that UNESCO must investigate Sur, which they have in their protection list, before demanding Turkey to examine. Describing UNESCO's request as a very late decision, Doğrul continued: "Let's put the decision aside, UNESCO did not say a word about this the past 4 years. The European Union and United Nations have always been saying things are 'concerning' or 'worrysome' for a long time until now. We have been telling them to stop worrying and join us and do something about it."
