İSTANBUL - Supreme Court Attorney General demanded the reversal of the decision of the 4 years 8 months prison sentence of Selehattin Demirtaş, the former Co-Chair of HDP.
26th Heavy Penalty Court of İstanbul gave a sentence of 4 years 0 months prison regarding Selehattin Demirtaş, the former Co-Chair of Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). In the same trial Sırrı Süreyya Önder, a former MP of HDP, was also sentenced to 3 years 6 months of prison.
Constitutional Court (AYM) later on gave a decision of violation regarding Önder's appeal and the appeal for Demirtaş has been iniciated.
The Court of Cassation Attorney General Office evaluated the appeal and demanded the reversal of the penalty decision on behalf of Demirtaş from the 26th Heavy Penalty court. In the letter of notification regarding the demand of the Attorney General it was stated that Demirtaş wer enot given time for his last defense and Demirtaş's right to defense himself was violated.
The letter of notification of the AG's office also stated that one of the sentences of Demirtaş was transcripted mistakenly and when the speech in question considered as a whole, it remains within the context of freedom of expression and speech.
