AMED - Hasine Güler, the wife of seriously ill prisoner Sıddık Güler, stated that her husband's health condition was getting worse and that he went out to the meeting by holding on to the walls.

According to the Human Rights Association (IHD) data, more than 1,605 ill patients are detained in prisons, 605 of which are seriously ill. 38 of the seriously ill prisoners need to be urgently released for treatment in order to protect their right to life; however, despite the reports, many ill prisoners died in prison, and some died shortly after their release. The condition of 84-year-old ill prisoner Sıddık Güler, who is on the seriously ill prisoner list and needs to be released urgently, is getting worse.

Güler, who was deprived of treatment for the health problem he experienced in prison, broke out in 1994 in Qerha village of Amed's Bismîl district, between soldiers and PKK members. During the search of the house during the conflict, a licensed gun belonging to Güler was found. Güler, who allegedly participated in the conflict with a gun, was sentenced to 36 years in prison by the State Security Court (DGM) in the case filed on the grounds of "disrupting the unity and integrity of the state". Güler's health problems, who have been detained for 29 years, are getting worse.

'HE IS NOT RELEASED DESPITE THE CALLS'

As the health problems of Güler, who lives in a wheelchair, progressed in 2020, İHD İskenderun Branch applied to the İskenderun Chief Public Prosecutor's Office with a request to postpone the release; thereupon, Güler was referred to Iskenderun State Hospital on January 29, 2021. The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office rejected the request for postponement of execution after a report was given at the hospital saying "There is no harm in holding him in prison". All applications made to the Forensic Medicine Institute (ATK) and the Ministry of Justice for his release received a negative response. Güler was taken to the Emergency Polyclinic of Iskenderun State Hospital on August 1, 2021, after he fell ill in prison. According to the examination results, "The patient has no problem. It is recommended to drink plenty of water" was prescribed. Due to this prescription given by the doctor, the application for release by the IHD Amed Branch was also rejected. In the report announced by the IHD Iskenderun Branch about Güler on March 12, 2022, the following statements were included: "At the age of 84, his memory is getting worse. His hearing loss has increased, it is not possible for him to stay in prison conditions and for his disease to be treated."

After İHD announced Güler's report, he was transferred from İskenderun Type T Prison to Menemen Type R Closed Prison against his will.

'WHY ARE ILL PRISONERS NOT TREATED?'

Hasine Güler (74), the wife of Sıddık Güler, who was not released despite being ill and unable to care for herself for years, recalled that her husband had hypertension, heart and rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and many other diseases. Güler said:" My husband was taken from İskenderun Prison to İzmir Menemen Prison for treatment for more than 19 months. I can not travel because I am old and ill and can not see my husband for 4 years. My children went to visit their father about 15 days ago. Their father came to meet with them by holding on to the wall. My husband is highly forgetful. He reaches a point where he doesn't recognize the other person and he can't hear them anymore. Sometimes he even forgets to drink water, eat and take his medicines. If you took him for treatment, why didn't the state treat him? If he is being treated, why is there no improvement in his health? Why are ill prisoners treated? Why is such a patient not reported? My son Habib, who has been imprisoned for 20 years, had high blood pressure and it hit his eye. He is also ill."
