COLEMÊRG - The action launched against mining activities in the Marunis region has entered its 4th day. Support for the action continues from surrounding districts.
The action started by citizens on April 22 against the mining activities that have been going on since 2007 and causing the destruction of nature in Colemêrg's (Hakkari) Marunis (Kavaklı) village continues. Residents from surrounding provinces and districts demanded that the works initiated by Sedex Resources Mining Company be stopped.
The ongoing action on the Şinê Bridge, located on the highway that provides access to the Colemêrg-Çelê (Çukurca) district, has entered its 4th day. Village residents, who held meetings with both Hakkari Governorship officials and relevant company officials, stated that their demands were not met. While the villagers' action in the region continued, the gendarmerie took intense security measures in the region.
While a group of approximately 100 people continues their action in the area where the mining area is located, citizens coming to the region from different districts also support the action.
Citizens' demands are as follows; “The activities of the mine located in the pasture areas of Marunis village must be stopped immediately. The damage caused by the mine to the environment must be compensated. The living spaces of the villagers must be restored and the destruction caused by mining activities must be eliminated. Reforestation must be done in the region.”
