İSTANBUL - Mentioning the Ankara Convention invented by the AKP following the withdrawal from the İstanbul Convention is a means to create the 'reasonable women, HDP MP Hüda Kaya said it will be used to draw boundaries for the women.

 

Turkey withdrew from the İstanbul Convention that aims to create mechanisms to prevent violence against women and to adobt legislative measures as well as encumbering party states to take these precautions and implement them effectively, on March 20, in the middle of the night. Claiming that the İstanbul Convention subsequently leads to polarization, the AKP people said: "We will create a new convention that is in line with the social fabric of Turkey, overseeing family values of Turkey. We will be an example to the world with this convention" and brought the Ankara Convention to the agenda.

 

Evaluating the said convention as a 'project to create reasonable woman', women underlined that they will not give up defending the İstanbul Convention. Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) İstanbul MP Hüda Kaya made evaluations to our agency regarding the Ankara Convention, invented by the AKP.

 

IN LINE WITH THE POLICIES OF THE AKP

 

Defining the İstanbul Convention as teh 'life assurance of women', HDP's Kaya said the decision to withdraw from the convention is in line with the 'misogynistic policies' of the AKP. Underlining that withdrawing from an international convention is also in line with the policies of the AKP, Kaya said AKP withdrew from the convention in line with the request of the segments supporting the AKP. Pointing out that the women have been fighting against misogyny for thousands of years, Kaya said: "Women have been fighting for a dignified stance, equality, freedom and owning their own fate.The actors change according to the countries but women aren't giving up from their struggle to exist. Women have paid great prices and gained their rights. They will not give up from their fight just because of the decision to withdraw from the convention or because of AKP's hostile policies." 

 

WOMEN DON'T NEED THE ANKARA CONVENTION

 

Drawing attention to the fact that at least 3 women are murdered on a daily basis, Kaya stated that in a country where women are murdered, the life insurance of women was taken away with the withdrawal from the convention.  Adding that the Istanbul Convention creates a ground for protecting women, especially from domestic violence and harassment, Kaya stated that the Ankara Convention is aimed at distracting the society. Kaya said: "We know the point of view of these people towards the women. The policies they create aims to confine women out of the daily life and into their homes. Therefore, no matter what the name of the new convention would be, we know how the content will be.  We don't need such a convention."

 

THEY ARE TRYING TO CONFINE WOMEN WITHIN CERTAIN BOUNDARIES

 

Underlining that the AKP is trying to confine women into their homes, Kaya stated that the Ankara Convention will only confine women within certain boundaries. Kaya underlined that a new convention focusing on the 'family values' will only serve as a means for the men to enslave women. They are trying to realize a project thinking, "The more productive the woman is between the kitchen and the bedroom, the more she prepares the ground for the peace of the man in the family". This is their perspective of a 'reasonable woman'. They don't want the women to question, to speak, they want the women to try to be happy withing the boundaries the men draw for them. Because if the women thinks, they will see that what is imposed on them is not freedom. We will not live withing their boundaries and we will not accept the Ankara Convention they created within those boundaries."
