İSTANBUL- Stating that Type S and Y prisons are a more stringent execution regime than Type F prisons, CİSST Coordinator Berivan Korkut said: "Prisoners are being held in  aggravated isolation situation."

Violations in prisons continue to increase. According to the April 2022 data of the Ministry of Justice, there are 314 thousand 502 prisoners and convicts in prisons. The total capacity of 271 thousand 823 prisons have exceeded their capacity.

The increasing number of prisons and the changing of the status make the violations of rights systematic. After the controversial Type F prisons, while it is criticized that Types S prisons will increase isolation, Types Y prison aiming to deepen the situation are to be implemented. Berivan Korkut, Coordinator of Civil Society Association in the Penal Execution System(CISST) made evaluations on Types Y prisons.

TYPE S AND TYPE Y ARE MORE STRINGENT EXECUTION REGIME THAN TYPE F

Korkut said: "The prisoners in types S and Y prisons are taken to the yard with the guards. There are no social activities like chat, sports or workshops in Types S prisons. The prisoners are held in cells except for a short while they are allowed to be in the yard. The situation is against human rights because the prisoners have the rights to be in the yard for one hour everyday. In Types S and F prisons, prisoners are forced to stand up during the count. We estimate the type S and Y prisons will be subject to more stringent execution regimes and more stringent rules than types F. The prisons are built outside the city so the visit of attorneys and families  are hard."

THE PRISONS ARE BUILT OPPOSITE TO THE SUN

There is no Type specified in Dumlu Prison. There isn't air circulation through the lower floors and the design of these prisons is in the opposite the direction to the sun. The presure on the democracy affect strictly the situation of prisons. The prison cannot affect the democracy in the country but the democracy can facilitate the situation of prisoners in prisons. They built bigger prisons to impress the society and use these prisons as a business. The NGO's must stand up against this. No matter how big the prisons are, this does not change the situation of the prisoners. They are not released before they die in prison.
