DİYARBAKIR - Mother of Peace Hayriye Türkekul was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for "being a member of a terrorist organization".
The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against Barış's mother Hayriye Türkekul (73) with the allegation of "being a member of a terrorist organization" was held at the Diyarbakır 10th High Criminal Court. Türkekul and his lawyer Mehdi Özdemir were present at the hearing. The hearing began with the prosecution repeating its opinion on the merits presented at the previous hearing. The prosecutor cited the press statements, actions and events attended by Türkekul, and hunger strikes as criminal elements. The prosecutor cited Türkekul's hunger strike in support of Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-chair Leyla Güven, who went on hunger strike in 2019, and her membership in the Rosa Women's Association as reasons for "being a member of an organization".
Lawyer Mehdi Özdemir stated that his client Türkekul was innocent and demanded acquittal. Türkekul also stated that he repeated his previous defense and demanded acquittal.
Based on the prosecutor's opinion, the court board sentenced Türkekul to 6 years and 3 months in prison.
MEMBERSHIP HAS BEEN ACQUIRED
A lawsuit was filed against Fatma Gültekin about her membership in the Rosa Women's Association, which was the reason for Türkekul's sentencing. Diyarbakır 10th High Criminal Court had acquitted Gültekin.
