AMED - Hunger Strikes Monitoring and Follow-up Coordination, which announced a report on the hunger strikes launched by prisoners in prisons, said: "The political power must take the necessary measures through peaceful means and take action to evaluate the demands before deaths occur."

The Hunger Strikes Monitoring and Follow-up Coordination, established by Amed Bar Association, Human Rights Association (İHD) Branch, Lawyers for Freedom Association (ÖHD) Branch, Prisoner Families Solidarity and Solidarity Association (TUAY-DER), prepared the report on the ongoing hunger strikes in prisons and announced it at the Bar Association Legal Aid building.

THE HUNGER STRIKE IS ON ITS 22ND DAY

Amed Bar Association Prison Monitoring Commission Secretary, lawyer Reyhan Gök, read the statement text. Noting that the hunger strike is on its 22nd day, Gök said: "To end the human rights violations in prisons in Turkey, to correct the worsening execution conditions, to end the long-standing isolation conditions of Abdullah Öcalan, who is held in İmralı High Security Closed Penal Institution, and to ensure the visits of his family and lawyers, the rotating hunger strikers, which was announced to the public by prisoners in prisons on November 27, 2023, demand a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue, continues on its 22nd day."

'THE GOVERNMENT MUST TAKE ACTION'

Stating that the ongoing isolation with absolute lack of communication in İmralı F Type F High Security Prison is against the Constitution, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECtHR) and the Law on the Execution of Penal and Security Measures, Gök said: "The political power should evaluate the demand of the hunger strikers before the process turns into a more dangerous point;otherwise, the political power will be responsible for the sad consequences that will arise regarding the prisoners' right to health and life. The government must take action. For this reason, the Ministry of Justice and relevant institutions need to take action as soon as possible.”
