WAN - People against the appointment of a trustee to the Wan Metropolitan Municipality do not leave the streets despite the police attack.
Following the appointment of a trustee to the Wan (Van) Metropolitan Municipality, protests started in the city. DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit, MPs, co-mayors and many people gathered at Beşyol Square and wanted to march. The police encircled the crowd and prevented the march, while many people were beaten. Upon this, people in the neighbourhood supported the march with applause and slogans.
While the tension continued on Cumhuriyet Street, many people were detained.
The protests that started on Cumhuriyet Street spread to the streets and avenues of the city. Protests continue in neighbourhoods as well. Electricity poles were toppled in Sanat Street, Maraş Street and many other points of the city, while people built barricades out of garbage containers. While all shopkeepers in the city centre closed their shutters, clashes that started with the police attack continue in all streets.
DEM Party Group Deputy Chairperson Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit and many people started to march on Cumhuriyet Street after the blockade. People support the march with applause and slogans.
