ANKARA –  Sezai Temelli, Deputy Chair of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party parliamentary group, emphasized the importance of the newly established parliamentary commission listening directly to Abdullah Öcalan as the chief negotiator. He stated that the Parliament is expected to legislate the commission’s proposals by October.

The Peace and Democratic Society Process, shaped by Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan’s call, has entered a new phase with the formation of the Commission on National Solidarity, Fraternity and Democracy in Parliament. The commission is expected to facilitate political, legal and social groundwork for resolving the Kurdish issue. Commenting to Mezopotamya Agency (MA), Temelli described the commission’s acceptance of its working principles as a promising start.

Temelli highlighted Ocaaln’s historically grounded approach and its relevance to the commission’s mandate. He said. “Ocalan’s method incorporates the collective memory of past uprisings and significant historical developments, guiding this commission towards a democratic solution for the Kurdish issue.”

Noting the importance of all parliamentary parties participating in the commission, Temelli expressed confidence that the commission will eventually gain a legal status, which would empower it to make binding legislative proposals.

LEGISLATION EXPECTED BY OCTOBER

Temelli urged the commission to address more than just disarmament, calling for a rational and inclusive approach that considers the future of all peoples in the region. He stressed the risks involved but expressed hope that the Parliament will begin legislating the commission’s recommendations by October.

DISARMAMENT CEREMONY HELD WITH SIGNIFICANCE

Describing the Peace and Democratic Society Group’s disarmament ceremony as a deeply symbolic and emotional act, Temelli underscored the need for the commission to safeguard both the legal and political rights of those laying down arms, including prisoners and exiles.

THE COMMISSION MUST HEAR ÖCALAN

Emphasizing the complexity of the Kurdish issue, Temelli insisted the commission should first hear from Abdullah Öcalan in person and engage in consultation with him. “As the main negotiator, Öcalan’s involvement is crucial for the commission’s meaningful progress,” he stated.

DIALOGUE WITH THE ORGANIZATION IS ESSENTIAL

Temelli stressed that the solution requires understanding the organization’s history and realities, urging dialogue rather than simplistic demands. He said, “This is a massive organization with a 47-year history of conflict, and the people expect answers about the future.”

CONSULTATION WITH SOCIETY IS NECESSARY

Pointing out the widespread societal impact of the conflict, Temelli highlighted the importance of dialogue channels and societal consultations to develop an effective roadmap and program.

IMPROVING ÖCALAN’S CONDITIONS

He called for improved conditions for Öcalan, recognizing him as the chief negotiator whose well-being is vital for the peace process.

EXPECTATIONS FOR A SOON VISIT TO ÖCALAN

Temelli concluded by expressing hope that the commission will soon visit Abdullah Öcalan, describing it as a positive step toward collaborative politics and lasting peace.
