VAN - The court, which issued an arrest warrant for HDP PM member Fırat Keser, justified the decision by saying that Keser lives close to the Van- Iran border and therefore he is at flight risk while attorney Sedat Kula said: "So if my client was living in Kayseri, Ankara or İstanbul, wouldn't he have been arrested?"
Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Party Assembly (PM) member Fırat Keser was arrested on Friday, May 28 after M.Ç., who was heard as a "witness" within the scope of the investigation opened in 2011, changed his statement 11 years later. The Aydın 2nd High Criminal Court, decided that Keser should be arrested because he lived close to the border and he was at flight risk. Reacting to the decision, attorney Sedat Kula said: "So if my client was living in Kayseri, Ankara or İstanbul, wouldn't he have been arrested?" Kula underlined that the change in the file was because of the fact that this file will be added to the case against the HDP to be banned.
Underlining that the biggest problem in the file is the reason for the arrest of Keser, Kula said: "They listed a series of reasons for the arrest. We objected against this. The most serious thing is that my client was arrested on the following grounds, which is discriminatory:my client was arrested because he lives in Van, which is border neighbors with Van and that the 'organization' operates in Syria and Iraq. The court claimed that my client might flee since he was living so close to the border. So if my client was living in Kayseri, Ankara or İstanbul, wouldn't he have been arrested? Despite years have past since the law suit was filed, my client has never been detained or arrested. Nothing changed in the file but they suddenly decided to arrest my client 11 years later. There is no evidence in the file. There is one thing that makes us suspicious. In the indictment of the HDP closure case, our client was asked to be banned from politics because he was a member of the HDP PM, and this file is a precedent for the indictment. All the activity in the file begins after the HDP closure indictment. An unlawful decision has been made. We suspect that they will use this law suit in the HDP closure case."
Adding to his words that they will continue to use legal remedies, Kula said that he objected to the detention.
